About

Dr Elizabeth Chapman Hoult is Director of Knowledge Transfer in the Faculty of Education, Canterbury Christ Church University in UK. Previously she worked in initial and continuing teacher education.

Her work combines the methodologies and texts associated with the study of English literature with educational research practices in order to attempt to understand the complex and profound nature of transformational learning.  She is particularly interested in challenging the limitations of the traditional academic text by the use of ‘naked writing’ (after Yeats) and fiction.

Her doctoral thesis was an investigation into the nature of resilience in adult learning.  It explored the reasons why some learners are able to survive and succeed in higher education and it drew on post-structuralist perspectives, particularly the work of Hélène Cixous, to open up readings of learning that are not well served by conventional social scientific approaches.  The work was awarded the British Educational Research Association’s 2010 prize for the best doctoral dissertation.

She was awarded a National Teaching Fellowship by the UK Higher Education Academy in recognition of her work with adult learners in higher education.
