About
JOHN IRVING is Professor or Music History & Performance Practice and Head of Music and Performing Arts at Canterbury Christ Church University.
Previously Director of The Institute of Musical Research, University of London, 2009-11, and of which he is now an Associate Fellow, he is a musicologist and performer. His main interest is in the instrumental music of Mozart, especially the piano and chamber music on which he has published five books, along with numerous articles, book chapters, editions and reviews. He is a frequent speaker at musicology conferences in the UK and internationally and is a Vice-President of the Royal Musical Association and a Trustee of the Horniman Museum, London.
John is also active in the field of performance, specialising in the fortepiano repertoire of the classical period. He has recently released a recording of sonatas by Leopold Mozart and his Salzburg contemporarieson the sfz label. Sonatas from the Court of Salzburg (available from http://www.sfzmusic.co.uk/cd-johnirving-so.html and on general release through Harmonia Mundi from 6 February 2012) was recorded on a historical 1764 harpsichord from the Edinburgh University Musical Instrument Collection. A further CD of Mozart’s keyboard sonatas on a 1763 Hass clavichord in the Russell Collection is currently in the editing stage for future release. Both projects were supported by British Academy Research Grants. Recent and forthcoming recital appearances include a Mozart piano concerto at the GSMD in London, repeated in April 2011 at a study day in the ‘Mozart Unwrapped’ series at King’s Place, London, a clavichord recital in the Greenwich International Early Music Festival, concerts of Mozart and Beethoven chamber music at the Turner Sims Concert Hall, Southampton, Clothworkers' Centenary Hall, Leeds, the Cobbe Collection, Hatchlands, and the ORPHEUS Instituut, Gent. John works extensively in the field of classic period chamber music with the ensemble DeNOTE, founded at the IMR in 2010 (www.denote.org.uk).
