Canterbury Christ Church University
Faculty Member, Faculty of education
About
I am a Senior Lecturer in physical education (PE) in the Faculty of Education at Canterbury Christ Church University. I previously held an academic position at the University of Worcester (UW) within the Institute of Sport & Exercise Science.
Prior to my position at UW I taught PE in English secondary schools.
At UW I began to appreciate the importance of a more student-centred approach to teaching PE, and, more specifically, the pedagogy of games teaching. The Teaching Games for Understanding (TGfU) approach as espoused by Dave Bunker and Rod Thorpe has played a particularly important role in my development as an academic, and how young people learn.
Influenced by the writings of contemporary authors such as Clive Pope, Scott Kretchmar and Trent Brown, and the late (and great) movement philosopher Peter Arnold I have begun to take my journey into the ‘slippery’ learning domain that is affect, and its little known relationship with TGfU. The philosophical work of Peter Arnold, dealing with the primacy of the moving agent and the subjective experience has itself led me to the work of French philosopher Maurice Merleau-Ponty and his work on corporeal phenomenology .
